Jesus be a fence!!!! I just can’t!
Just read it. I am seething with anger!
Fitz erotic fascination with Olivia? Are we watching the same show.
It really gets my goat, and unfortunately the more of these kinds of articles I read, the more anti-Bells I’ll get even though she’s not doing anything wrong.
This must be what gentrification feels like.
Scandal started off slow, the little show that probably sort of could. Then it’s become a pop phenomenon (I know people don’t like Shonda Rhimes, I know, I’ve even heard people call her an Uncle Tom/Aunt Jemima, I know, but you can’t doubt her talent or vision), and all of a sudden, the show is too good for the black, female lead.
So all of a sudden, everyone wants Mellie to be the centre. If you want a show with a white woman of a certain age (i.e. over thirty five) to take centre stage, there’s Homeland and The Good Wife. I just… might have to watch less TV and create more content in 2014.
I get the problem with the article and how the media is trying to push her but my way of dealing with it is to not take it out on Bellamy and her hard work. When it comes to recognition, I’m not mad she is getting it because she plays Mellie perfectly (even if you don’t like her) but the articles are an issue and the only way to fix it is to continue to support Kerry and remind everyone that she is the lead.
Not Bellamy. Not Tony. Not Anyone else. But Kerry and ONLY Kerry.
I don’t blame Shonda though; she can’t win. She creates a show about a black woman and people want to grab the first White Woman they see in the supporting cast. She loses both ways and it has to be frustrating not being able to fairly write for other characters without worry that the media will accept them more than the lead who the show is written for and about.
Strangely, I can understand Shonda Rhimes’ position, due to my experience in fandom. In order to stand out as a writer in fandom (and TV) your currency is characters and form, and if people like what you do, they trust you with more story (and are more willing to read you). So you write for white viewers with white characters (although how Rhimes wrote Cristina Yang was a neat trick) to get eyes on the screen. You get enough capital (and trust) to write a black character.
You fly under the radar for a bit, until the show becomes a hit, but because the white gaze is so used to staring at itself and being stared at, that’s why they pretty much overlook Olivia/Washington/any none white person. This is why when people say, “I’m colour blind” I believe them. They are only attuned to their own colouring, and blind to others. That’s been most white critics viewing process with Scandal so far.
Right now, I do like Bellamy Young, but there’s a resentment on my side. I’m all, “Just… stop talking because it only encourages the critics.” It’s petty on my side, I’m not even going to lie, but as time goes on, I’m pretty tired of the laziness when it comes to media, and the relentlessness of the white gaze. I’ll get over it, but not tonight.
I congratulate Shonda for successfully navigating a world that wasn’t meant for people of our kind. We have our issues with her but Shonda has honestly made moves that Hollywood won’t and I can’t knock her for always presenting diversity and complexity in her characters and shows. For story-telling and success, I can see why a “white face” is needed because sadly, this is what we are used too but Shonda slowly pushes different character and people into our view were we finally accepting them as unique and valuable.
Olivia Pope is an interesting one because she was the face from the start and though Scandal’s success wasn’t too high back then, but people accepted her. Sadly, it seems that Mellie has become someone they feel can “replace” her now that it has their attention.
I can understand your feelings on Bellamy. I wish that she wouldn’t say a thing to not give anyone any ammo. The media is lazy and sadly, her words will be give more attention and power than those of Kerry, even if she didn’t mean for it too.
I feel bad for Bells because she is honestly in a position where shes damned both ways. But I get why some might want her to just stay hush. it’s harsh but the media cray needs to calm.
Rhimes brought in relatively diverse casting under the Trojan Horse of McSteamy’s, McDreamys, Olitz et al, so I’m not mad. Rhimes has offered help to Lisa Raye of Awkward Blackgirl fame (in terms of getting her in the room to pitch) and Ava DuVernay to direct Scandal, so yeah, nothing but respect from me. Rhimes did it, and some none white actors can eat due to her shows going into syndication, et al.
I’m just mad that after three seasons of Olivia going out there, she’s drifted over and Mellie is the lead in their eyes. It’s like… that time when Michelle Obama had to be reintroduced to the public back in 2008 at every speech, every event- and when crazy eyed (and back then an unknown) Palin shows up doing her ‘moms as pitbull speech’ people, even the liberal Chris Matthews was all, “It’s as if we know her already!”
It’s spirit breaking to be a minority watching TV, that’s all I’m saying. So I know that you’re all, “Bellamy Young is a nice white lady” and I get that but right now, I just don’t want to see her face, hear her voice, because every simper, every bright eyed “Golly gee” she does is a degree of othering for Kerry Washington (the lead). No matter how often Olivia pope has reintroduced herself to us (a heartbroken woman, a child bereft of parents, head gladiator), by notion of her non whiteness, she’s still a stranger to the white critics watching, their blindness such that they go to the white woman in the room.
I’m just not here for a defence of Bellamy Young and the whole, “She’s kind, she’s smart” right now. Yes, it’s unfair, no I’m not being reasonable, but right now, idgaf. Bellamy Young is fine. By dint of her complexion, BY will always have the protection.
I am with you I think the media white wash is doing harm to BY then good. I will never really give BY accolades she gets enough from the white media but I will never tear her down. Just wont comment. BTW where are the KW interviews?
